Program Description
The Bachelor of Science in Geology program at Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (DeKUT) is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to address some of society’s most critical problems, such as energy, water, mineral resources, the environment, climate change, and natural hazards like landslides, volcanoes, earthquakes, and floods.
Rationale of the Programme
Geologists are essential scientists who contribute significantly to studying and resolving issues related to:
- Energy resources
- Water resources
- Mineral resources
- Environmental protection
- Climate change
- Natural hazards
Due to an increasing global population, there is a growing demand for raw materials (minerals, energy, and water) essential for economic growth. These resources are becoming scarcer each year, posing significant environmental, economic, societal, and political challenges. Knowledge of raw materials and their management, including economics, assessment of reserves, expert site studies, and process management, is crucial to ensure the security of these supplies.
Educational Objectives
- Provide students with a solid foundation in geological sciences.
- Foster critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Equip students with practical skills through hands-on experience and fieldwork.
- Prepare graduates for careers in various sectors, including energy, mining, environmental consultancy, and research.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the program, graduates will be able to:
- Understand and apply fundamental geological principles.
- Conduct geological surveys and analyze geological data.
- Assess and manage natural resources sustainably.
- Identify and mitigate natural hazards.
- Communicate effectively in professional and academic settings.
Career Opportunities
Graduates of the BSc Geology program can pursue careers in:
- Energy companies (oil, gas, geothermal)
- Mining industries
- Environmental consultancies
- Government agencies
- Research institutions
- Academia
Hands-On Experience
The program emphasizes practical training and fieldwork. Students will have opportunities for:
- Geological field trips
- Laboratory work
- Internships with industry partners
- Research projects
Collaborations
The department collaborates with leading industry players like Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) and Geothermal Development Company (GDC) to provide students with real-world experience and enhance their learning.
Conclusion
The Bachelor of Science in Geology at DeKUT is a comprehensive program designed to prepare students for the challenges and opportunities in the field of geosciences. It aims to develop skilled geologists who can contribute to sustainable development and the responsible management of natural resources.
